Choosing Between Side-Opening and Top-Opening Round Arch Electric Daylighting & Smoke Exhaust Skylights

Release time:
In the selection of ventilation, daylighting, and fire smoke exhaust systems for industrial and public buildings, side-opening and top-opening round arch electric skylights are both popular choices. While they share the same arched structural form, they differ significantly in their functional emphasis and suitable application scenarios. Precisely matching the needs is the key to selection.

The side-opening round arch skylight’s core advantage lies in its “versatility.” Its vertically side-hinged sash design allows an opening angle of up to 60 degrees, with an effective smoke exhaust area equal to the full window opening. It also serves daily natural ventilation needs without requiring additional ventilation devices, offering outstanding comprehensive value. This side-opening round arch electric daylighting and smoke exhaust skylight utilizes “true structural waterproofing” technology, combined with an arched daylighting roof and sealing design, ensuring excellent water and air tightness to completely eliminate leakage risks. The arched structure also facilitates drainage, prevents dust accumulation, and offers good self-cleaning properties. Constructed from high-strength materials like hot-dip galvanized steel plate and stainless steel sections, it provides strong wind load resistance, making it particularly suitable for typhoon-prone regions or dusty environments in the north. It is widely used in buildings requiring daily ventilation, such as those in machinery manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, and light industry.

The top-opening round arch skylight, on the other hand, focuses on “smoke exhaust efficiency.” Its sash opens upward at an angle of ≥80 degrees, providing an effective exhaust area nearly equal to the window opening, resulting in faster smoke flow velocity and excellent exhaust performance. Its arched frame and panel offer higher strength, capable of withstanding greater snow and wind loads, but its function is relatively singular, primarily intended for fire smoke exhaust and not suitable for daily ventilation needs. This round arch skylight provides excellent daylighting performance, with the top often paired with FRP daylighting panels or polycarbonate hollow sheets. It is suitable for buildings where smoke exhaust is the top priority and daily ventilation is essentially unnecessary, such as warehouses, logistics facilities, and food and beverage plants.

Two core principles can guide the selection: If a building needs to balance daily natural ventilation, daylighting, and fire smoke exhaust, the side-opening round arch electric daylighting and smoke exhaust skylight is the better choice. If fire smoke exhaust is the primary requirement, with stringent demands for exhaust efficiency and structural load capacity, and no need for daily ventilation, then the top-opening skylight is more suitable.
